UPDATE: In Memory of Jay Cleveland

University of Mississippi student, Army ROTC cadet

On Nov. 1, 2016, Cadet Jay Cleveland was killed in a motorcycle accident. This tragedy hit very close to home for the UM Army ROTC as Cadet Cleveland was a very engaged member and a close friend to many of us. This year, we are dedicating the Egg Bowl Run to Jay, in honor of his life and commitment to the Rebel Battalion.

The Coveted Golden Egg

The Battle for the Golden Egg is a tradition dating back to 1927. After a brawl broke out between fans and students from Ole Miss and Mississippi State during the 1926 game, both universities' student body associations found a way to turn negative energy into a positive event by introducing a prize to the annual competition. Each year since, the rival football teams have hit the gridiron to win the bragging rights and the thrill of bringing the coveted trophy home, where it can be shared and admired by the student body and alumni alike. Ole Miss leads the series by 20 wins, with the most recent being in 2014 and 2015. Hopes are high that the Golden Egg will remain in Oxford for yet another year after the battle on Nov. 26.

The Egg Bowl Run

In 2013, a new tradition was born when Army ROTC cadets from Ole Miss and State participated in a 100-mile game ball run from Starkville to Oxford. This year, on Monday, Nov. 21, MSU cadets will run the ball on its first leg from Starkville to Calhoun City, where it will be carried around the city's court square. Then, Ole Miss cadets will run the ball back to Oxford, where it will be presented to Head Football Coach Hugh Freeze.

Commemorating 101 years of US Army ROTC

This year's Egg Bowl Run will also celebrate 101 years of US Army ROTC. In honor of that milestone, the game ball has been personally autographed by Coach Freeze and donors will have a chance to win the ball at the conclusion of this its journey from Starkville to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. The daunting 50-mile run is no meager task. But as the tradition has grown, more and more Ole Miss ROTC cadets have become eager to participate in the more than 12 legs of the run to Oxford.

Why Invest in ROTC?

With your generous support, Ole Miss Army ROTC can help prepare future Army leaders and also help soldiers in need. Your money will also go toward the Rebel Batallion's events, such as the annual Dining Out. Most importantly, your donation will help support scholarship opportunities for students who strive to be Army officers but do not have the monetary means to do so. On behalf of the Ole Miss Army ROTC program and all of its supporters, we thank you for your contributions and hope to see you cheering on our runners on Monday, Nov. 21!

BONUS PERK!!

Contributing financial support to the Egg Bowl Run gives all donors a chance to win an Ole Miss Rebel football signed by Coach Freeze. Each participant who donates will be entered into a raffle, from which one lucky winner will be selected.
