Army ROTC Egg Bowl Run

INTENSE RIVALRY – HISTORIC SEASON:

The first Battle of the Golden Egg was played in 1927 on Thanksgiving Day, with the Ole Miss Rebels winning the football game 20-12. This year marks the 113th meeting between the two largest schools in Mississippi and the 89th Egg Bowl. Just like the schools’ other fierce competitive gridiron matchups, this year’s game will be one for the ages. Both teams enter the 2016 Egg Bowl hoping to bring the Golden Egg back to their school. The in-state rivals have never been “this good and this close,” reported one media outlet.

EGG BOWL RUN – A NEW TRADITION:

This year the University of Mississippi designated November as “Military Appreciation Month” to honor all of those courageous men and women who serve in the U.S. Military to keep our nation safe and help others around the world. A new tradition was born in 2013, when Army ROTC cadets from both universities participated in a 100-mile game ball run from Starkville to Oxford. The Egg Bowl Run takes place on Monday, Nov. 21, this year as the run starts in Starkville and ends in Oxford.

Ole Miss and Mississippi State cadets partner to cover the 100-mile run in two separate legs. This year, MSU cadets will begin their leg of the run in Starkville at 5 a.m. and will meet Ole Miss cadets at the halfway point in Calhoun City at the town square's pavilion around noon. Cadets will exchange the game ball in a short ceremony, with the Ole Miss cadets continuing on to Oxford. The Egg Bowl Run concludes with the Rebel Battalion cadets presenting the game ball to Head Coach Hugh Freeze in front of the Lyceum at approximately 9 p.m.

The game ball will be on display in theOle Miss Student Union following the Egg Bowl Run until the day of the greatly anticipated game. On Saturday, Nov. 29, the Rebel Battalion cadets will proudly carry the game ball and follow the Ole Miss Rebel football team in their traditional game-day walk through the throngs of excited and enthusiastic football fans lining the Walk of Champions in The Grove and on to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
