In 2012 Richie had his first symptoms of muscle twitches, followed by fatigue and weakness towards the end of 2013. In January of 2014, Richie and his family received the news that he had ALS, a progressive neuromuscular disease. Richie passed away on January 15, 2015, after a long, valiant battle with the disease. Born on April 14, 1963, Richie would have celebrated his 53rd birthday this year.
Richie attended the University of Mississippi for both his undergraduate and law degrees. During his time as an undergraduate at Ole Miss he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Order of Omega, and Mortar Board. He was also active in intramural sports, especially flag football. As a law student Richie continued to excel in academics. He was a member of the Mississippi Law Journal and Phi Delta Phi.
Richie practiced Law at Markow Walker for 24 years. He was named partner and was an A rated attorney by Martindale Hubbell. His colleagues describe him as one of the best attorneys around. His work ethic was second to none, and he was known for going above and beyond to get the job done. Not only was he considered a great attorney, but he was also very well liked by all who worked with him.
After meeting his wife Lisa on a blind date, the two were married on top of a mountain in Vail, Co. They were married for twenty years and had three beautiful daughters – Haden, Allyn, and Anna Ross “Rossy.” Richie was his daughters’ biggest fan and rarely missed a chance to watch them in their various activities. Richie attended Madison United Methodist Church where he was a member of the New Covenant Sunday School Class.
The successful lawyer and beloved family man somehow still found time for another passion of his – the great outdoors. He enjoyed mountain and road biking, running, hunting and white water rafting. Richie was a member of the Jackson Metro Cyclist & Tri-County Mountain Bike Association and the Riverside Hunting Club, and he also coached soccer.
Richie will always be a beloved member of the Ole Miss family and his name will forever be linked to the place that brought him such great joy. The endowment was established as a way to pay tribute to the life and legacy of Richie. It has appropriately been named "The Richard "Richie" M. Edmonson, Jr., Memorial Scholarship Fund" and will benefit students attending Law School at the University of Mississippi.

To the class of 1988, Richie was our friend to everyone he knew. He was a member of the Mississippi Law Journal and Phi Delta Phi, the oldest and most prestigious legal society in North America.
Richie loved his brothers in Kappa Sigma, a national fraternity founded in 1869. This year marks the Kappa Sig's 148th anniversary.
Richie was an outstanding student at Ole Miss. He was initiated into Mortar Board, the premier national honor society recognizing college senior for superior achievements. There are 228 chartered chapters of Mortar Board across the nation.
Richie enjoyed the outdoors greatly. He loved mountain and road bilking, running, hunting, and white water rafting. He participated in hundreds of races and was a natural athlete.
Richie received his undergraduate degree from Ole Miss on 5.18.1985.
Richie was incredibly active and on his 47th birthday he celebrated by riding his first century. That's right, 100 miles on his bike.
