Italian Rebels’ Global Health Experience

                                                   Pharmacy Practice Around the World!

Bonjourno,

A unique global health experience in Italy awaits University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy students for summer 2019.  Why does global health matter? Why should you consider supporting Ole Miss students in this educational opportunity?

The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy is committed to enhancing global health experiences for our students so that they gain awareness, knowledge and experience related the important role pharmacists have in both public health and global health. National and international organizations are advocating for increased involvement of pharmacists in global health. Our goal is to prepare pharmacy students to help improve health and health equity for people around the world, while also increasing their own knowledge and expertise.

In recent years, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy has called for more global experiences for pharmacy students and faculty. Studies show that meaningful international study opportunities:

  • Improve a student’s clinical knowledge, skills and knowledge of health disparities and global burden of disease based on the geographic locations
  • Promote awareness and understanding of health issues in other countries
  • Help increase cultural competency
  • Help build global partnerships

Students will see firsthand the practical and ethical challenges in providing care in Italy and other countries, as compared to the care for Americans. Students with global health education become more adept at meeting the culturally specific health beliefs and needs of our diverse populations at home and abroad. Improved global health can impact health care disparities and global burden of diseases. We want to see our Ole Miss pharmacy students well equipped with exceptional experiences that will impact their careers for years to come. This will also add to their ability and preparation to serve as leaders in the pharmacy profession.

We seek gifts of all sizes to support student enrollment in the Italy trip this summer, providing our students an enriched opportunity.

Faculty Experience Facilitators

Participating Ole Miss pharmacy students will be guided by the outstanding faculty members, such as Dr. Seena Haines, chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice and lead faculty for the experience.  She has a passion for working with culturally diverse, underserved populations, and bridging health-care disparities. This professor began developing student experiences in 2017, with prior mission trip experiences to Honduras and Bolivia.

Dr. Meagen Rosenthal received her PhD in Experiment Medicine from the University of Alberta, Canada. Her PhD focused on improving the integration of clinical services into community pharmacy practice by improving our understanding of the professional culture and personality traits of pharmacists. Since then she has expanded her research interests to include the development of patient centered research questions in diabetes self-management education and support, and giving patients a central voice in their health care. She is very excited about the prospect of continuing to explore these ideas and exploring a new culture along with students in Italy!

Our central purpose is to expand enrollment among the School of Pharmacy’s student body in this experiential learning course, which can provide them a rich, transformative background experience that supplements their academic pursuits.

See a Need, Fill a Need

This Ignite Ole Miss campaign serves as the launchpad to build a more reliable financial future for opportunities in global health education otherwise not offered in the School of Pharmacy as part of student didactic experiences.

All contributions will go directly to support student scholarships for enrollment in this extraordinary opportunity by helping cover costs associated with airfare, hotel accommodations, and field experiences. Participating students receive academic credit, which meets curricular requirements for the PharmD degree.
