Ole Miss students can find themselves in trying times while enrolled at the university. Like the rest of society, a student may experience an unexpected illness, death of a family member, loss of property due to natural disaster or other challenges.
Now they face a pandemic.
For these situations, the Christopher C. Holman Fund for Student Emergencies exists as a safety net and maximizes efforts to keep students on the path to graduation. From this fund, micro-grants can be awarded to students during their time of need.
Focusing on schoolwork, part-time jobs and a normal routine can be extremely difficult when your personal life is dramatically disrupted by an emergency. Supporting this fund can help alleviate stressors, which now include a “new normal.”
Thanks to previous donations to the Emergency Fund, several of students have already been helped.
For instance, a student who lost a parent after enrolling at UM struggled financially but was able to pay the costs of her education through a combination of scholarships, grants, loans and campus employment. However, she lost her campus job when the university transitioned to on-line only classes. The fund provided her with the money she needed to pay for groceries and her utility bills.
A senior, earning income by organizing events for a nonprofit agency, lost her job when the nonprofit had to cancel its activities due to COVID-19. Her fears of losing her housing were alleviated when the fund provided her with the cost of rent for one month.

Created in 2012, the Emergency Fund has already helped a number of students who faced personal crises. By making a gift, you are providing these students the opportunity to remain enrolled so they can reach their personal and academic goals.
The Christopher C. Holman Student Emergency Fund is dedicated to helping students in times of need so that they can achieve their academic goals; this is achieved by reducing financial pressure. In the wake of COVID-19, we have experienced an increase in students requesting support from this fund. Your gift allows us to meet these needs and help ensure the financial stability of our students.
So far, our Student Affairs team has been able to respond to requests and provide needed funds within an average of 24 to 48 hours. When we hear of students in need, the policy is to “drop and do!” Gifts of all sizes mean that we will be able to provide the most help possible to our students.
The average request for emergency funds is around $500. So far, these funds have addressed housing insecurity, medical costs, and the cost of traveling home. Gifts of all sizes add up to make a difference in the lives of your fellow Rebels.
