The mission of our Academic Support programs is relatively straightforward: to assist any and all students enrolled at the University of Mississippi with meeting their academic needs. Yet, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, this unit’s mission has become even more crucial and far more complex.
As a result of the coronavirus, students had to return to their homes to promote social distancing and courses quickly transitioned to online delivery. This meant the services offered by Academic Support programs – including academic mentoring, academic success workshops, academic consultations, skills-based classes and student success coaching – also had to adapt to this challenging new learning environment.
The University has established a goal to help ensure our students have access to the tools they need to complete their semester and providing financial support to Academic Support programs is instrumental in achieving this objective during this especially difficult time.
Funds directed to Academic Support will assist the program’s ability to expand offerings such as online webinars and consultations, strategies for Student Success Coaches to see additional students and upgrade technology to meet the needs of our greatly expanded number of distance-learning students.
Our research clearly shows that students who engage in Academic Support programs are much more likely to return to the University – even after experiencing academic challenges.
