The Christopher C. Holman Emergency Fund is dedicated to helping students in times of need and achieving their academic goals by reducing financial pressure.
Who is Christopher C. Holman?
Christopher C. Holman was the father of 5 daughters, four of which competed on the UM rifle team and are now UM Alumni. He was diagnosed with late-stage cancer while the daughters were still attending the university. With the support and help from faculty members, the daughters were able to balance academics and caring for their father. The memorial fund was created with a significant combined gift from the five daughters who want to ensure support is available to Ole Miss students who may find themselves in trying times while enrolled at the university.
The Fund:
Unexpected hardships such as tragedies, homes burning, cars breaking down, and family emergencies can put financial stress on students. The impact of these hardships can lead to difficult decisions when it comes to continuing education.
This fund has helped numerous students during these difficult times. Contributing to this fund will ensure current and future Rebels will be given the opportunity to continue chasing their academic goals even through tragedies.
With the current issues surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, students who are already going through hardships on top of this need help and assistance now, more than ever. During such uncertain, trying times, any kind of donation would be greatly appreciated and would go towards the effort of aiding students in need of support.
The Fund Supporting Students:
Through the years there have been many recipients of the Christopher C. Holman fund and it is fulfilling to know that all of the money received has been used to positively impact our fellow classmates.
One of the recent fund recipients is a student who had 4 family members contract COVID-19, which had a major impact on his family's financial struggles. He felt the pressure to help them pay the bills at home, leaving him without any financial support for rent and food in Oxford. Thankfully, our funds gave him the support he was looking for and the ability to pay for food, medicine, and help with bills.
Another recipient is a graduating senior who lost one on campus and two off campus jobs due to the impacts of COVID-19. Her parents had limited resources available and were forced to break into their retirement fund to allow her to complete her degree. Unfortunately, that still was not enough so the fund was able to step in and pay rent and utilities for the remainder of her time at the University.
Even before COVID-19 students have undergone struggles in their lives and it is the goal of Christopher C. Holman fund to alleviate some of the pains they endure. Working to help some of our fellow Ole Miss classmates has brought a special tug of emotion for us and to see the money be used so well is the best reward we could ask for. What we hope to see, is that every student who is struggling be given a helping hand in their pursuit of higher education. This fund affects people beyond the reach of the classroom, and we hope to convey the importance of what we are trying to do and would love to help as many as we can.
