MBA Supports Grove Grocery

Grove Grocery UM Food Pantry LogoOur MBA team invites you to join in our effort to fight hunger by contributing to Grove Grocery. This campaign will help the UM Food Bank restock its shelves and continue to provide nutritional support to the Ole Miss community. #MBASupportsGroveGrocery

Here's an opportunity to help University of Mississippi students have the nutrition they need to thrive in and out of the classroom. Please support the Grove Grocery!

Join us in our mission as an Ambassador of this campaign by sharing on your social media and via email, which will help up spread the reach for this initiative. Those clicks and shares truly help!

Mission

Grove Grocery seeks to end campus hunger and alleviate poverty by discreetly providing nutritious food products and hygiene products free of charge to students and employees in the Ole Miss community.

Need

Shelves of Grove Grocery with sign that says green beansLack of access to food and resources to fulfill other basic needs is a reality for many college students across the United States and on the University of Mississippi campus.

In the first two weeks of shifting to remote learning and mission-critical operations, Grove Grocery distributed 1,855 pounds of food to students.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Food Pantry usage has been especially high. In fact, we have provided over 8,000 meals since March 15, 2020 (as of July 16, 2020). Without our generous donors, we would not be able to do such incredible work for the community.

During an interview with the Oxford Eagle, Kate Forster, director of advocacy at Ole Miss, said, “Financial hardships and food insecurity are some of the main reasons students may leave or step away from their education for a period of time. So taking just a little bit of that off their plate and giving them a little bit (of help) through the end of the month to the next paycheck can really make a difference with a student in order to stay enrolled.”

All services are 100% confidential and students' identities are kept strictly anonymous.

The Food Bank now offers only take-out bags due to social distancing guidelines. These bags are available any time outside the Ole Miss Food Bank entrance at Room 213, Kinard Hall, and the bags are restocked Monday through Friday as the Food Bank’s current inventory allows. Due to high demand, a limited variety of items is offered in the bags, but more food and hygiene items will be added as resources become available.

The need for food and other items has become more urgent than ever. The Ole Miss Food Bank, founded in 2012, has established a commitment to foster a healthy college community by providing nourishing food. Grove Grocery can operate only with the generous support of its volunteers and donors.

Please help us alleviate hunger among students and others on campus who need our support by making a gift today.

Reach

Volunteer putting groceries on shelfGrove Grocery estimates that the Food Bank serves more than 150 people each year.

On the University of Mississippi campus, a 2017 Honors thesis by K.L. Halfacre found that 46.1 percent of students were food insecure, with 24.7 percent experiencing low food insecurity.

The USDA defines food security as “access by all people at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life.” Mississippi has the highest food insecurity rate in the United States, consistently ranking No. 1 or No. 2 for the past 15 years (USDA-ERS).

Statewide and National Affiliations

The University of Mississippi is a member of the Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi College and University Anti-Hunger Alliance. The UM Food Pantry is also a member of the College and University Food Bank Alliance.

Thank you!

Our MBA Team and Grove Grocery would like to thank all of you who have made financial contributions because without you all, we would not be able to achieve our goal of giving food and other essentials to our students, faculty, and staff.

We would also like to thank all the Ambassadors working together to spread the word.

We thank you for your time and generosity in helping the University of Mississippi community.
