Honor a Trailblazing Honors College Dean by Investing in Scholars

For 19 years, Dr. Douglass Sullivan-González, most affectionally known as “DSG,” led the way for the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College. Although he left his long-held position of dean this year to focus full time on teaching and research in the University of Mississippi’s Arch Dalrymple III Department of History, his legacy and impact will endure for years to come.

DSG put honors students first and practiced true servant leadership. He embodied what it meant to be a citizen scholar and transformed the philosophy of experiential learning for SMBHC students. With your help, we can continue to enhance the Honors College experience of our students through high-impact learning. Your gifts today will fund an incredible, thought-provoking speaker for our Honors Convocation and a week-long workshop with a successful industry expert.

The SMBHC is touted among the best honors colleges at the nation’s public universities because of the way our high-performing students engage our campus and communities. Their opportunities to flourish have been made possible by the inspirational leadership and vision of Dean Sullivan-González. Give today to solidify his legacy even further and provide greater opportunities for our citizen scholars and future innovators to lead the way.

The Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College enrolls approximately 1,700 students and includes students from 42 states, as well as a number of countries, including Nepal, India, Germany, Vietnam, Mexico, the Philippines and South Korea. Its students span the breadth of the university’s fields of study, representing around 80 academic majors. In addition to prestigious national awards, SMBHC students also are engaged campus leaders and contributors. All 10 students inducted into the Hall of Fame in spring 2021 were members of the Honors College.

“Ask the right questions. Take good, managed risks. Engage your community as citizen and scholar.” – Dr. Douglass Sullivan-González

33 Scholarly Koi Fish

Last we counted, there were 33 koi fish in the Honors College pond! We may need a snorkel for the next recount. Why not give $1 per fish to support our students?

$97

Born in the 90s

The College of Liberal Arts at the University of Mississippi instituted our first honors education in 1952, but Jim and Sally Barksdale made the Honors College a reality in 1997 by making the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College a change agent on the Ole Miss Campus. Commemorate our founding year with a $97 gift!

$300

Year Three: Making a Scholar

Honors College students must complete a capstone project or thesis in order to graduate. The research and work starts in their third year of the Honors College to ultimately demonstrate what it means to be a “citizen scholar.” If you fondly remember your third year in the Honors College or appreciate the work that our scholars do, please make a gift of $300.

$1,665

$1 for Every Student

When the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College launched in 1997, its students numbered a little more than 100. Today, there are 1,665 Honors College students. Much of that growth was nurtured by DSG's leadership and donor commitment to the Honors College's values. Reaffirm your commitment by giving $1 in honor of every current student.
