A new scholarship in the School of Engineering honors the life of the late Dr. Waheed Uddin, the founding director of UM’s Center for Advanced Infrastructure Technology.
The Dr. Waheed Uddin Memorial Scholarship for Civil Engineering supports students preparing for careers in infrastructure and transportation. Dr. Uddin, who passed away in November 2020, had more than 30 years of professional experience in highways, airports, sustainable development and related areas of transportation engineering and infrastructure management. Today, we honor his legacy with the creation of this scholarship to allow more students to pursue a degree in civil engineering.
“Dr. Uddin was a pillar of the Ole Miss School of Engineering whose expertise in civil engineering infrastructure and transportation was responsible for hundreds of graduates finding successful careers around the world,” said Dave Puleo, dean of the School of Engineering.
Because of professors like Dr. Uddin, our civil engineering students are prepared upon graduation to tackle the nation’s infrastructure needs. We need more civil engineers to guide us as we make a more sustainable world. Today’s students are focused on improving the nation’s infrastructure, ranging from enhanced transportation networks to water and sewage treatment facilities. Please help us today with an investment in our future civil engineers.
Honor Dr. Uddin’s lifelong dedication to Ole Miss students by making a gift to the Dr. Waheed Uddin Memorial Scholarship for Civil Engineering. Invest in our civil engineering students so that they may make an impact on the way we all live!
Dr. Waheed Uddin had more than 30 years of professional experience in helping design and improve highways, airports, sustainable development and related areas of transportation engineering and infrastructure management. Please make a $30 gift to commemorate his storied career.
Dr. Uddin established the Center for Advanced Infrastructure Technology at UM in 1999. Its mission is to develop and implement advanced computer simulations and remote sensing technologies for building longer lasting airfield pavements and intermodal facilities, monitoring and preserving the transportation infrastructure, and developing cost-effective procedures for improving anti-terrorism readiness, mobility through assessment and airfield suitability analysis, and security evaluations for troop and personnel deployment during emergency, humanitarian and war operations.
As part of his infrastructure research, Dr. Waheed Uddin advocated tirelessly for safer highways for Mississippi drivers. Mississippi leads the nation in traffic fatalities per capita, with 579 fatal crashes in 2020. Dr. Uddin often spoke out on this issue, proposing changes to our highway systems that could save lives. Today, his former students carry forth his work in the state. This scholarship will go to students who will make a difference by continuing to build on Dr. Uddin's research and advocacy for our citizens.
Your $1,000 gift funds one scholarship for one civil engineering student. Dr. Uddin's lasting impact on the state is the thousands of students he taught and mentored over the years who then went to work improving Mississippi's infrastructure. Your gift makes an impact now and in the future!
