The Mississippians Jazz Ensemble consists of 20 talented University of Mississippi students. Directed by Dr. Michael Worthy, associate professor of music, we are one of the oldest collegiate jazz ensembles in the nation. The band performs on campus several times throughout the year and recently performed at the 2016 Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival and the 2012 Jazz Education Network National Conference. Recent guest artists and clinicians include Branford Marsalis, Jeff Coffin & The Mu’tet, Roy “Futureman” Wooten, Mark Taylor, Jim Snidero, Marcus Printup, Elliot Mason, and Ali Jackson.
In July 2018 we plan to travel to Europe to perform at two of the most prestigious jazz festivals in the world: the Jazz à Juan Festival in Juan les Pins, France and the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy. The chance to represent Ole Miss on these international stages will create memories that will last a lifetime. We're excited to experience new cultures and serve as ambassadors for the university while abroad!
This opportunity will also help us grow as musicians. We can't wait to meet other jazz performers from around the world and hear their interpretations of this American style of music. It will be an honor to bring this newfound perspective back to Ole Miss to be incorporated into our future performances.
Your support is needed to help make this dream a reality. International performances require significant investment but create uniquely valuable opportunities for our student musicians and the University of Mississippi. Please consider making a gift today and sharing this campaign with your friends and family.
Thank you for your generosity!
