What is Grove Grocery?
Grove Grocery seeks to end campus hunger and alleviate poverty by discreetly providing nutritious food products and hygiene products free of charge to students and employees in the Ole Miss community. The UM Food Pantry was established in 2013 to help reduce food insecurity among the University of Mississippi students and employees on campus. The Food Pantry is operated by a student committee with the help of student volunteers. They offer a wide array of options including frozen food, popular snacks, hygiene products, spices, and more. Striving to be more than just a panty, the Grove Grocery also offers meal swipes, Grab-N-Go bags, and can fill grocery orders for students.
Why should you donate?
Lack of access to food and resources to fulfill other basic needs is a reality for many college students across the United States and on the University of Mississippi campus.
According to a 2016 study by the College and University Food Bank Alliance , students who experience food insecurity were negatively impacted academically and reported choosing not to purchase a required textbook, missing class and dropping a class as outcomes related to lack of food access and basic needs.
On the University of Mississippi campus, a 2017 Honors thesis by K.L. Halfacre found that 46.1 percent of students were food insecure, with 24.7 percent experiencing low food insecurity.
